Dyscalculia
Definition
Dyscalculia is a learning disability or difficulty related to mathematics. Dyscalculia is a broad term used to refer to many severe difficulties in mathematics, ranging from the inability to understand numbers to applying mathematics principles to solve problems (Logsdon, n.d.).
Causes
Dyscalculia can either be caused by genes or by environmental factors, such as drinking alcohol or drugs during pregnancy just as other disabilities may occur. These factors cause differences in the brain function and/or structure in the areas of the brain that are involved in mathematics (Wilson, 2007).
Prevalence
It is estimated that 2.5-7.5% of students are dyscalculic (Schultz, 2013). Dyscalculia is not very common or well known yet. It is slowly gaining more attention and more time is spent into researching it.
